For one moment…unselfishness

This will be my PSA for the year.

Noun. 1. unselfishness - the quality of not putting yourself first but being willing to give your time or money or effort etc. for others.

Cold weather is upon us with family holidays not too far behind, so with that in mind, keep reading.

Recently I went New Mexico with my mother-in-law. We went to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and had a lot of fun. We made a quick day trip to Santa Fe and walked all over and stumbled upon an outdoor artist market. Locals selling anything handmade you could imagine; photographs, paintings, jewelry, and hand spun wool. It was amazing. While walking around I of course noticed a lot of interesting scenes to practice my street photography.

A well dressed young man sitting on the ground caught my eye. He was deep in conversation with an older man sitting on a bench. I then noticed the shopping cart next to the bench which looked like it contained the older man’s belongings. I watched them for what seemed like a really long time, but in reality only mere seconds had passed. I then noticed how many more homeless people there were at this park. All were alone. No one talking to them. No one listening to their stories. No one.

This young man, I can only imagine how he made the older man feel, wonderful perhaps. Taking time out to SIT and talk and listen. How hard is that? It’s truly nice to see one person NOT be hateful, or offended, or spewing negativity, or worrying about first world problems, but just being kind. Kind is free.

So this is what I ask of those of you who are still reading to this point. Be kind. Take a moment out of your day, and think what you can do to be kind. But not just at the holidays, all year. While you’re out shopping for the "must have" toy of the season, grab a gift tag off the giving tree at in the door way. Donate the coats your kids outgrew over the summer to local charities. Donate unused household items (dishes, pots, pans, utensils) to second hand stores. Voulenteer. Drop loose change in the red kettles. Teach your children charity.

Unselfishness, it only takes one moment.
